Meg Langslow was actually looking forward to renovating the old Victorian mansion she and her boyfriend Michael bought. But she wasn't thrilled by the lifetime of junk accumulated by the house's eccentric previous owner, Edwina Sprocket. The easiest solution hold the end-all and be-all of gigantic yard sales. But when the event attracts the late Miss Sprocket's money-hungry heirs, the over-enthusiastic supporters of some endangered barn owls, and customers willing to go to any lengths to uncover a hidden treasure, Meg suspects things have gotten a little out of hand. Then, an antiques dealer is found stuffed in a trunk with his head bashed in - and the yard sale turns into a days-long media circus.

Meg, a smart likable amateur sleuth, and her would be fiance Michael, she has commitment issues, buy an old house far out in the country buts it's cluttered to the rafters with ugly antiques. Meg's solution is to have a giant yard sale , all her relatives are invited to sell their own junk and the Sprockets, members of the previous owner's family, show up along with local folk to sell a humorous array of items. Along with the house Meg and Michael also got a barn with an actual barn owl.During this massive yard sale a local and much disliked antique dealer is murdered in the barn. The police arrest a suspect right away but it's Micheal's friend, a fellow professor at the university. Meg and Michael team up to solve the mystery, They have to make their way through a long list of suspects as it seems everyone in town had some problem with the victim.
This book is hilarious. It truly has the funniest garage sale/yard sale scenes I've ever read. Meg's yard sale almost turns into a county fair at one point. If you love animals there are so many funny scenes from a crazy little dog that terrifies everyone to a flock of sheep running a muck and then of course there is Sophie, the barn owl. I learned more about owl pellets in this book then I ever wanted to know.
It's a great mystery and a hilarious book. It's fresh, well written, and a fun read. I highly recommend Owls Well That Ends Well.

Owls Well That Ends Well (Audible Audio Edition) Donna Andrews Bernadette Dunne LLC Dreamscape Media Books Reviews
The ending totally got me. Great entry in the series.
Meg and Michael are the proud owners of a house and a huge pile of junk so they are having a garage sale with 10% going to the previous owners heirs as per the sales contract. It has turned into a circus with various relatives participating as well. Kind of a pop up flea market. Then a sleazy antique dealer is found in a trunk when a woman wants to buy it. He was killed in an off limits barn but many people were in and out all day. Michael's friend and colleague is arrested so Meg sets out to prove him not guilty and perhaps make sure Michael gets tenure. Crazy antics, lots of relatives, lots of twists.
I love all the Donna Andrews books. I like how when you follow a series you can see the writer's skills or writing decisions change, and I think Donna Andrews' books have gotten better each time. These aren't those heavy, psychological thriller types that I find leave me anxious and worried sometimes; I like these because they have interesting crimes committed by every day people, and the main character, Meg, deals with lots of everyday problems--her own and more often other people's--with humor, forgiveness, and mercy. In this story she is running a huge yard sale when the crime happens. I can so relate to her war on clutter, other people's clutter really, and her patience with everyone else's interests being imposed on her like owls and wellness and decorating. And her list that tells her when to breath (in every story), sounds much like my own. If you want entertainment and humor along with your mystery, and a character that you might actually be able to relate to, and a story which leaves you still able to sleep soundly, then these are the ones to try.
Both outstanding and lousy at once.
The yard sale from hell is probably the best example of the wacky things that happen in this series. The parade of suspects who each spotted the previous one leaving the barn is a pretty standard farce routine but that doesn't make it any less hilarious. I can't honestly pick anything as more funny than the rest, each new crazy thing Meg's family does is sillier than the rest. The crowded bathrooms maybe? The pranks people play with the giant lift?
The sheep? Idk. I basically fall over laughing each time I read it.
But. . .
The murderer is NOT irritatingly similar to something else that I won't go into
and the absolute worst thing in the series that I have so far read is the complete lack of accuracy about the owls.
Barn owls are about the most common owl in the world and great horned owls are NOT rare.
The people I know of who rescue wildlife might feel that owls would be IN DANGER from fools who do not understand how important they are to pest control, but they would not describe the species as endangered.
Meg's father would know this if he were a birder AT ALL
let alone the enthusiast that he usually is.
If I could I would give this both 5 stars for the hilarity and 2 for the parts that include the glaring mistakes where the owls are concerned.
I truly hope that this is the only book that the author apparently either didn't do any research at all, somehow got misimformed (how the HELL that would happen I have now clue), failed to correct it when the actual birds she wanted to use were replaced with the 2 very common ones that show up in the text, or some combination of those.
None of the others I have seen contain anything else this bad.
And few contain anything close to the brilliance of the Yard Sale from Hell. the comedy is pure fun. Some of the best in the series
The errors are by far the worst.
Very mixed.
Probably this is why the reviews are also so mixed.
